Snook are hard-hitting ambush predators that thrive around docks, mangroves, and bridges throughout Clearwater, Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs. Famous for explosive strikes and strong fights, they are a favorite among experienced anglers. Snook fishing is best in warmer months when they are most active and feeding aggressively.

TROUT

REDFISH

Speckled trout are one of the most consistent and fun inshore species in St. Josephs Sound, often found over grass flats in large numbers. Great for beginners, trout provide steady action and will hit a variety of artificial lures and live bait.

Bigger “gator trout” offer an exciting fight and are a prized catch.

Tarpon are the ultimate gamefish, known as the “Silver King” for their size, strength, and acrobatic jumps. Each year, large migratory tarpon move through Clearwater and Tarpon Springs from May through August, offering anglers a chance to hook into a true bucket-list fish. Tarpon fishing is one of the most exciting experiences on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

JACK CREVALLE

Jack crevalle are one of the hardest-fighting fish you can catch in Palm Harbor, known for their speed, power, and aggressive feeding behavior. Often found in large schools, they create fast-paced action and will hit a wide range of lures and bait.

If you want a drag-screaming fight, jacks deliver every time.

SHEEPSHEAD

Sheepshead are a popular wintertime species in New Port Richey, commonly found around docks, bridges, and structure. Known for their distinctive teeth and light bites, they can be challenging but rewarding to catch. Sheepshead are excellent table fare and a great target during cooler months when other species slow down.

Why Redfish Are One of OUR Best Inshore Targets

Huge redfish on a inshore fishing charter. Inshore flats fishing charter

Redfish are one of the most consistent and exciting inshore species in St. Josephs Sound, making them a top target for anglers year-round. Found cruising shallow grass flats, tailing along oyster bars, and holding tight to mangrove shorelines, redfish are perfect for sight fishing and light tackle action.

What makes redfish so popular on Florida’s Gulf Coast is their combination of accessibility and power. They are aggressive feeders that will strike artificial lures, soft plastics, and live bait, yet they fight hard and make strong runs once hooked. Whether you’re a first-time angler or experienced fisherman, redfish provide an unforgettable experience on the water.

Looking to target redfish on your trip? Our guided Clearwater redfish charters specialize in shallow-water sight fishing.

BEST TIME TO CATCH REDFISH

Redfish can be caught year-round from Tarpon Springs to Clearwater, but the most consistent fishing typically occurs during the fall and spring months. During these seasons, redfish are often found in shallow water feeding aggressively, making them ideal for sight fishing opportunities. In cooler months, they tend to school up and become easier to locate, while in warmer months they spread out across the flats and mangroves.

WHERE WE TARGET REDFISH

On our inshore fishing charters, we focus on shallow-water environments where redfish naturally feed:

  • Grass flats in 1–3 feet of water
  • Mangrove shorelines and edges
  • Oyster bars and sandy potholes
  • Backwater areas with moving tides

These areas allow us to sight fish when conditions are right, giving clients the chance to actually see the fish before making the cast.

HOW WE CATCH REDFISH

We primarily target redfish using light tackle and techniques tailored to conditions:

  • Artificial lures for active fish and sight fishing
  • Soft plastics and topwater baits in shallow water
  • Live bait when needed for consistent action

Our approach is focused on creating opportunities for clients to learn, improve, and experience the excitement of targeting redfish the right way.
